Union Cabinet approves budget for multidisciplinary education and research improvement Schemes
Indian Union Cabinet Approves ₹4,200 Crore MERITE Scheme to Boost Technical Education
In a landmark step toward strengthening India’s technical education ecosystem, the Union Cabinet has approved the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERITE) scheme. With a financial outlay of ₹4,200 crore for 2025–2030, the initiative is designed to transform 275 government and government-aided institutions, including 175 engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics.
Alignment with National Education Policy 2020
The MERITE scheme is closely aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions a more holistic, flexible, and multidisciplinary approach to education. By focusing on equity, governance, and academic excellence, MERITE seeks to make Indian technical education globally competitive while addressing regional and social disparities.
Funding and Coverage
Out of the total allocation, ₹2,100 crore will come as external assistance from the World Bank, underscoring international confidence in India’s education reforms. The scheme will benefit a wide spectrum of institutions, including:
- National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
- State Engineering Institutions
- Affiliating Technical Universities (ATUs)
- Polytechnics
- State-level education departments
Key Interventions
MERITE aims to create a future-ready ecosystem through a set of focused interventions:
- Curriculum Modernization – updating courses to meet industry 4.0 and emerging technology needs.
- Faculty Development – capacity-building programs to enhance teaching, research, and leadership skills.
- Digital Transformation – adoption of e-learning platforms, smart classrooms, and digital governance tools.
- Research and Innovation Hubs – fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and startups to drive innovation.
Impact and Beneficiaries
The scheme is expected to benefit over 7.5 lakh students, with a strong emphasis on employability, multidisciplinary learning, and inclusivity. By bridging skill gaps and expanding access, MERITE will support India’s growing demand for a technically skilled workforce.
Implementation Framework
A Central Nodal Agency will oversee the rollout, supported by premier institutions like IITs and IIMs, along with regulatory bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). This collaborative model ensures both academic rigor and policy alignment.
Toward a Global Education Hub
By combining modern pedagogy, robust governance, and research excellence, MERITE represents a strategic investment in India’s knowledge economy. The scheme not only strengthens domestic institutions but also positions India as a global hub for high-quality, affordable technical education.
